I Made the Huffington Post!

In all the excitement, I forgot to mention here that I was featured there on March 10.  The only reason I even found out about it is because the gallery where I'm currently showing this piece sent me the link.  Pretty cool.  Here's a screenshot:

The article starts out... "Technology can only get you so far.  No matter how many clear-as-day DSLR shots you take, no matter how many Valencia filters you lovingly apply to your iPhone photo of brunch, you can't fake pure photographic genius."

Then, there's my cigar box pinhole shot on old Polaroid film of sand paths taken at dusk in the summertime.  I'm so honored!

Krappy Kamera 2016

So I'm in this year's Krappy Kamera show at the Soho Photo Gallery in Tribeca.  Though it's not my first time to be selected,  it's always an honor to take part.  The show opened yesterday, with the reception happening two nights ago.  When I arrived, I was one of three asked to make a speech about my camera and my photography - nerve-wracking, to say the least.  My photo, taken with my Cigar Box Pinhole camera with a Polaroid back, titled "Summer Dusk", took the People's Choice Award!

Afterwards, I went with friends to a nearby local bar/bistro which has been in business since the 1800's.  It's one of those warmly lit places with dark wood interior, and tin walls and ceilings.  They set out crayons on the butcher paper covered tables, and of course, I had to draw my 'Devil Boy' character.  By the end of the night, our table top was covered in art.

Next, we walked home to Soho, (it's right next to Tribeca) and stopped after dining hours at a favorite place of mine.  It wasn't until the next morning that I opened my People's Choice Award.   I still can't believe it, and was thrilled to find a lovely red and white Lomography "Meg" camera with ring flash, a little hardback book about Diana cameras (and Diana clones), as well as three rolls of film.  It will be fun to see what I do with this one.  

Barcelona!

espai[b] is a gallery of contemporary art in Barcelona which has chosen two of my photos to exhibit in what will now probably be an annual show since the great success of the first one in 2008. The show's title, 100x100Photo, refers to the number of photographers, and the fact that 100 large prints of each of their photographs will be sold at very affordable prices to the public. This is my first international show, and I am very honored and excited!!

The show starts tomorrow, April 16, 2009. As of the writing of this post, the current show on their site is the last 100x100Photo show, and prints are still available from that one. Take a look around, I see so many things I would love if I had more wall space!

Celebrating Abundance

I must give a big thanks to Jess of Pecannoot who featured my photo entitled "Obesity" there. Pecannoot is a wonderful site which honors the theme of 'abundance'. We all need to recognize the abundance which we may have in our lives now, and that which is to come; and we need to believe that the world has much to offer each one of us, not just a lucky few. There is plenty to go around; more than we can imagine. It's a good message, and a wonderful place to be honored (check it out!) Thanks, Jess!

My Treasury Made the Front Page of Etsy.com

Ok, first of all I must explain what a Treasury is. When I first joined Etsy in order to set up a shop, I kept reading about them in the Forums. “I got a Treasury!!” was a common message along with the link to view it. I never really understood the big deal about them, and no one could really answer me succinctly when I asked.

Basically, Treasuries are thumbnail lists of items for sale on Etsy; like a contact sheet. You choose a title based on a theme you have in mind, and fill it with items available on Etsy (often from your own list of favorites.) There are 333 Treasuries at any given time on Etsy, and snagging one is actually difficult and cause for celebration. They last for 3 days, normally, then disappear for someone else to snag and set up.

The front page of Etsy is ‘made’ from one of these Treasuries and the mystery as to how one gets chosen by Etsy Administration for this honor is almost mythical among members. So, the other day I thought I’d try my hand at obtaining a Treasury, and I did it! Success at getting one was a huge excitement for me. But then today it was my Treasury which made it to the front page, (pictured here) and I can’t tell you the joy it feels to know I have helped all these wonderful artists get added to other members’ lists of favorites, and hopefully sales. I’ve been featured on the front page before, and resulting traffic and recognition is vastly significant. It’s a great way to be discovered out of the thousands of shops on Etsy.
