Cleaning Up Other People's Mess

Do you ever feel like you have difficulty being creative when your life feels cluttered? How about when your home is messy? I definitely have this 'syndrome' that says if there are tasks to be done, they start to build a barrier between me and my art. I am most happy when everything is clean and taken care of, and my unusual work hours and resulting insomnia don't exactly enable efficiency towards that end. Sometimes other people make a mess for me to clean, whether because they are mean, angry, or just thoughtless, there's no one else to take the task. This type of situation has been slowing me down a lot, lately, but I intend to tackle it to the ground.

The photos above are of local graffiti (I sell a print of one of the pairs of legs in my shop, taken months before these) which was subsequently defaced over and over. Someone finally painted the wall around the girls, but eventually the desecration became overwhelming. The wall is plain, now.

i love that graffiti work. i love how creative and 'outside the box' graffiti has become over the years.

i am the same re: work/tasks/chaos affecting my ability to sit and be creative, and i've always absolutely hated that. i'd love to be able to block everything out and just grab whatever pockets of time i had to devote to art, but it's as you said with the mental barriers.. frustrating.

wishing you the very best of good luck tackling this! if you discover any good tips or secrets on how to do this, let us all know. ;)

HeeHee, ok, I will try to figure out the secret of these kinds of 'tackles'. I'll share it when I do. :)

i too struggle w/ having things "ideal" before throwing myself into something creative. Your post has me inspired to create... but cleaning first. So easy to procrastinate on the cleaning, BUT then the creating never seems to happen. Am I making any sense??
I've got a pile of "projects" just waiting for me and my "clean" space. Ha!

I *think* I understand you, Sandy. I am glad I am not alone! :D

wowzers those are pretty nifty... I've always wanted to pay with spray paints some of the art is so awesome... like this guy at South Street seaport in nyc that would make fantastic space inspired spray paint art. Uber!

I'm the same way, too. It always seems like there is something around the house that needs to be done. I'm pretty sure this is because I can get so into a project for a few days that I ignore my household duties. And if it looked not-so-good before, it's going to be embarassingly dirty/cluttered/neglected by the time I'm done.

I get my best work done when my hubby is out of town and then I stay up until all hours of the night (there is definitely a night owl in me). I have no inclination to clean at midnight, so all my energy goes to creative ends. I think you just have to find some time, some circumstance, and give yourself permission to ignore everything else when that comes up for you.

Meekiyu .... spray paint-ing is intimidating to me. Plus, it would just float all in my hair and clothes. Yeah, I do best to come by after it's dry and snap pics. :)

Victoria .... it is sort of nice to hear so many people are like this. I'm not always good at giving myself permission.

I have been feeling like that lately... especially with all the angst about whether or not we are going to get the new house etc... I am lucky to have some very talented friends though, that I can call up pretty much anytime and go out and take pictures with. Some of us lean the same way in terms of style - and some are completely different - and that is usually where the creative spark comes in - when you get a wedding photographer that comes out to do an urban decay shoot - or a landscape photographer that comes in the studio to do some high fashion shots - and we all start talking and playing with lights and trying out the "what if?"... it is pretty cool.

Gosh Jeremy, that's so great. (hey, and lotsa prayers coming your way for the new house!)

Welcome and thanks BOWquet!

I think creativity has a lot to do with environment, and I've just spent weeks decluttering. Also have insomnia but many creative peeps are full-on creative in the nocturnal hours so that may explain it.
It's funny because when there is cleaning to be done I procrastinate by doing art projects, and vice versa ;)

Anyway,
I'm horrid because I'm tagging you! It's only 6 little random facts though! :D

Oh sheesh-o-rama, Heidi! I am about 3 tags or maybe it's 4 now, BEHIND! Okay, okay. I will get to it....eventually! It is perhaps time to do another.
